Characteristics of Modernism in Architecture
Bernardo Fort-Brescia, along with his co-principal, started an architectural firm known as Arquitectonica in 1977. Under Bernardo Fort-Brescia’s leadership, Arquitectonica has been active in international architectural markets in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Manila, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, and other notable cities. The firm was also recognized for integrating bold modernism into some of its projects.
Modernism became the single most important architectural style in the 20th century. The style is also known as international style or international modernism after an exhibition by Philip Johnson in America. Modernism emphasizes volume, minimal orientation, and asymmetrical compositions rather than ornament.
Modernism also embraces the use of traditional building materials in new ways. Brick, wood, and stone are used plainly. In addition, the architectural style shows materials in their natural character. Instead of being painted, wood is often left stained to display its natural attributes. Modernism also employs the use of natural light. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows are a common characteristic of modern buildings.
